Land Girls at Pluckley
Andrew J Sleep was awarded an MBE for his services at Pluckley Flax Mill in August 1944. Caroline Millan, Andrew’s granddaughter, has been in touch and shared some photos from her family’s collection. These photos show the Land Girls working out in the fields and in the mill itself.
‘Flax growing’ was the growing of a 5 petal light blue flower with a stem of 3-4 feet. After harvesting, the plant was manufactured into linen, a key material during times of shortage.
