John Craven visits the secluded estate of Luton Hoo, where the walled garden and the estate’s farmland have played an important role throughout the years. Both were used as training grounds for Land Girls, and John meets Zeita Holes who trained as a dairy maid there.

Zeita Trott, aged 17, joined the Women’s Land Army [WLA] in Bedfordshire in the summer of 1942. She was based at Bolnhurst hostel in the north of the county and travelled out in mobile gangs each day to work on local farms. She left on medical grounds in 1945 after injury at work. She later married and became Mrs Holes.
