Dorothy Hughes née Holt
Dorothy is the woman sitting on the front wheel of the tractor and wearing a large-brimmed hat.

Employment

Worked in agriculture at Ellesborough Manor in Buckinghamshire in 1918. Went on to work for Thomas Wooster, who farmed somewhere near Basildon, Berkshire.

Life After War

Dorothy returned to her home village of Linkenholt and moved to nearby Upton when she got married. Her husband was born at Beeches Farm in Vernham Dean and came from a farming background – in later life he kept a pig and he rented a couple of fields in which he grew crops.

Dorothy had a hard life in which money was always tight: she picked stones from farmers’ fields and took in washing to make ends meet. I believe that the time she spent as a member of the Land Army was one of the happiest periods of her life.
